Down Under With The Isbells
Australia is vast, wild, and wonderfully welcoming. During our 2.5-week road trip from Brisbane to Cairns, we were blown away not just by the incredible scenery and wildlife—but also by the kindness of the people we met along the way. Queensland’s East Coast is a traveler’s dream, especially for those looking to immerse themselves in natural beauty, marine life, and a bit of off-the-grid adventure.
Charming Coastal Towns & Wildlife Encounters
Starting in Brisbane, we set our sights on the northeastern stretch of Australia, taking our time to stop in charming, family-friendly beach towns like Noosa and Agnes Water. These coastal gems offer a laid-back vibe with gorgeous beaches, cozy cafes, and small-town charm that makes you want to stay forever. They're perfect for travelers with kids or anyone looking for a peaceful place to unwind.
Of course, no Aussie adventure is complete without some wild encounters. Queensland is teeming with iconic creatures: crocodiles, snakes, vibrant marine life, and yes—kangaroos, our absolute favorite. Every day felt like a new discovery, especially for nature lovers and wildlife watchers.
Underwater Wonders: The Great Barrier Reef & Whitsundays
One of the biggest draws to this coast is the opportunity to dive into the Great Barrier Reef or sail through the stunning Whitsundays. Whether you're snorkeling for the first time or a seasoned scuba diver, the underwater world here is nothing short of magical. Coral gardens, sea turtles, tropical fish—every dip beneath the surface is unforgettable.
Fraser Island: Remote, Rugged, and Remarkable
Midway through our journey, we ventured to Fraser Island—the largest sand island in the world and a true highlight of the trip. This place is remote, rugged, and completely off the beaten path. You can only explore it via 4WD, driving along its sandy "highways." We spotted wild dingoes, explored rusted shipwrecks, and even passed a washed-up whale carcass—a stark reminder of nature’s raw power. Accommodations are limited, so it’s best to plan ahead if you’re making this detour (which we highly recommend).
Tropical North: Cape Tribulation & the Rainforest Coast
The further north we traveled, the more tropical and lush the landscape became. The journey culminated in Cape Tribulation, a destination that feels like the edge of the world. It’s the only place on Earth where the rainforest meets the ocean, creating a landscape that’s as dramatic as it is beautiful.
Swimming here is largely off-limits due to the presence of crocodiles and snakes, but walking through the rainforest paths offers its own rewards. Keep your eyes open for fluorescent green frogs hiding in the leaves, and marvel at the bright tropical flowers that line your path.
Queensland’s East Coast offers a little bit of everything: adventure, relaxation, wildlife, and unforgettable scenery. From beach towns to remote rainforests, this stretch of Australia gave us some of the most unique and wild experiences we’ve had in our travels. Whether you're diving into coral reefs or driving a 4WD across sandy beaches, there's something here for every explorer.
Planning a trip to Australia? Be sure to add these stops to your itinerary—you won’t regret it.
